Liang Haiming, Professor and Dean of the Hainan University Belt and Road Research Institute, Chairman of the China Silk Road iValley Research Institute
Holding Professor Feng Da Hsuan's book, China's Millennium Transformation: The Belt and Road Initiative, I am filled with mixed emotions, as if I am grasping a ticket to the future that has yet to take flight. This feeling may stem from my close relationship with Professor Feng. My sons, Lawrence and Harold, even saved a VIP seat on their toy spaceship model for him, intending to take him along on their imaginary interstellar journey. Professor Feng's wife even complained to me that her husband spends more time talking to me each day than he does talking to her. Thus, writing this book review also feels like an internal family accolade.
Although I guess that Professor Feng must be looking forward to my book review, after all, our collaboration and understanding in the field of the Belt and Road Initiative is unparalleled. As Professor Feng said to me before, “in this respect, no one knows me more than you.”
Even before the book's publication, I was quite familiar with its content, thanks to Professor Feng's enthusiastic explanations, which have nearly worn my ears out. Whenever he talked about the Belt and Road Initiative, I feel as though I am in his exclusive lecture hall enjoying a VIP experience. He even expressed his gratitude to me in the book's preface, leading me to momentarily feel like a co-author.
In this context, writing a book review might also feel like "selling my own melons." However, with Professor Feng's birthday approaching, I have been pondering what gift should I give him? A book seems too cliché, while a bottle of fine wine might lead to him engaging me again in a lengthy discussion about the "Belt and Road." After careful consideration, I believe a book review is the best idea, as it conveys my sentiments and aligns with our collaborative research.
Looking back to our first collaboration, Professor Feng was in his sixties at that time. He mentioned that it was his first time publicly publishing an article with someone he had never met in person, and he felt quite nervous about it. I shared the same jitters : could a physicist truly delve into economic matters across disciplines? To my surprise, once the article was published, it became a huge success. From that moment onward, we became a golden duo in the field, co-authoring over 60 papers in both Chinese and English and jointly publishing the book Belt and Road Initiative: Chinese Version of Marshall Plan.
Taking this opportunity to write a review, I would also like to ask Professor Feng about the publication of our other manuscript on the "Belt and Road" in Chinese, whose draft has long been ready. When do you plan to publish it in China? I have been waiting so long that my hair might as well have turned gray, yet I have not received your confirmation.
I would also like to voice a complaint about Professor Feng. His sharp questions and critiques can be both endearing and daunting. Every time I present a draft to him, he manages to throw out at least a dozen questions, making me question my ability to write. However, it is this spirit of inquiry that infuses his works with both depth and intrigue, making them hard to put down.
Even more impressive is Professor Feng's interdisciplinary prowess. As a world-renowned physicist, henavigates economics, political science, and communication studies with ease, which is truly admirable. Especially in recent years, he has also collaborated with me to explore the "Belt and Road" using big data and artificial intelligence, demonstrating a momentum that is nothing short of rocket-like.
As for Professor Feng's comment about retiring(退出江湖) from the field at eighty, I can only chuckle. In the challenging and opportunity-laden realm of the "Belt and Road," how could he ever think of stepping back? I am well aware of his passion and sense of responsibility for the Belt and Road Initiative. Whenever this field faces misunderstandings or challenges, he is always the first to step forward to clarify the facts and counter any slander. Thus, I firmly believe that in the coming years, and even decades, we will continue to see more remarkable works from Professor Feng Da Hsuan on the Belt and Road, guiding us in exploring the infinite possibilities of this world.
This book is not only a testament to Professor Feng Da Hsuan 's wisdom and passion but also reflects his profound understanding of the "Belt and Road." As readers, we not only gain knowledge but also feel his love for academia and commitment to research.
Professor Feng, Happy birthday! To bring you birthday wishes, according to Chinese tradition, I especially wore red clothes with Chinese characteristics to take a photo with your new book.May your "Belt and Road" spaceship always be filled with the power of exploration!
